OK, there are so many choices for set-top media players, but SO many BAD choices in the LOT. This one is different! The WD TV Live HUB  review is not like the others in that you can tell they have created a technology platform themselves. Almost all of the other choices are about the same in the user interface. The user interface is one of the most important parts of a media player, yet they all fail miserably to delight customers. WD stands way ahead of the back. The User Interface is clean and responsive and does everything intuitively. It feels like a professional released product, not some experiment sold at retail.

The live hub can easily share files and the network via streaming, and with the included 1TB drive, it makes a perfect place to store all my movies. It just works. Windows 7 sees the media player no issues, no tricks of games required. No software on the PC to install at all if you like. The Windows PC sees this as a NAS device, and the Media Player Hub is happy to play the movies via HDMI. Isn’t that what people want? Yes!!! The Remote control is also VERY nice, reasonable heft, no a cheapo remote with buttons in the wrong places. Clearly marked, well thought out.

Its gotten good reviews, I like the built in hard drive and the option to connect to Netflix and other type services. The menus are workable, I was very impressed with the clarity it produced on my “old” big screen projection TV. It seemed like it took a very long time to transfer data from external HD or SD sources via the USB 2.0 connects and that was a dissapointment. Im also very dissapointed that it dosent have a built in wireless feature (future model perhaps?) You have to use either an ethernet RJ plug in, or a wireless bridge to RJ. It will set up with a wireless usb device but only certain ones are supported im told and this eats up one of the two usb ports (I pluged in a usb hub and its seems to work ok with that so may be good up to 256 usb devices). Its small and lights up nice with a white emblem. The remote is fairly easy to use and feels good.
I am dissapointed too that there dosent seem to be a “security” feature (as id like to keep grown up material on the internal HD but dont want just anyone to have access to it, but I dont see support for the device to access trucrypt type secure filedrives, etc.
However, I found it wouldnt play my WMV movie files and this was rather disappointing also. I was informed it had super wide compatibility–guess thats a big hole if it cant play wmv’s.
It didnt come with a manual either on the internal hard drive, or on paper in the box. There was a quick setup card with some photos and physical setup was a snap (color coded wires and such). It seems there is a download manual available but I dont have it hooked up to internet yet.
Overall glad I bought it. I also wish there was more compatibility to a DVD player or VCR (Id like it to be the only device I have to manage, and nice it if could do DVR functions too, but I guess that is asking too much–perhaps that will be an all in one device in the future.

Hey , this is my fist review, well , the wd hd tv live hub is a excellent product, i like its design , size and weight, it’s very handful, it has played every file i ‘ve tried. The only thing i noticed was that the menu is not that responsive , and when i first connected a hdd to it, it freezed. that’s it, it is a 90/100.
